- Melbourne
Energy, daring and imagination.
Timo-Veikko Valve (Tipi to his friends) left Helsinki 17 years ago to become Principal Cello of Australian Chamber Orchestra. Since then he’s continuously travelled across Australia and the globe delighting audiences on his 400 year old cello.
For this project we welcome him as our guest curator, director and soloist. The music Tipi has chosen for these concerts is a beautiful depiction of his Finnish nationality, his time in Australia, his love of the cello and devotion to chamber music.
For these concerts, Tipi envisions Melbourne Chamber Orchestra as an enormous chamber ensemble: Schubert’s iconic Arpeggione Sonata is cast as a cello concerto, and Sibelius’ virtuosic Intimate Voices string quartet is performed by the whole orchestra.
Reflective works by Ida Moberg from Finland and Olivia Bettina Davies from Australia, and echoes of Australian legend Peter Sculthorpe, complete a captivating concert experience.

Why You’ll Love this Concert
Captivating Cello
Tipi left Helsinki 17 years ago to become Principal Cello of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Since then, he’s continuously travelled across Australia and the globe delighting audiences on his 400-year-old cello.
Sublime Schubert
For this performance, Tipi casts Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata as a cello concerto. Experience music that disappeared for almost 50 years, was rediscovered, and is now iconic for its blend of sensitivity, beauty and energy.
Virtuosic Sibelius
Who better to lead us through a work by one of Finland’s best-known composers than a Finnish cellist? Tipi has chosen Sibelius’ Intimate Voices quartet, as arranged for sting orchestra, to showcase the qualities of the larger chamber ensemble.
Intimate Reflections
Reflective works by Ida Moberg from Finland and Olivia Bettina Davies from Australia, alongside echoes of Australian legend Peter Sculthorpe, round out a concert that highlights both the intimate nature of chamber works and the depth of the chamber orchestra.
