Melbourne Chamber Orchestra

Melbourne Chamber Orchestra creates powerful, local fine music experiences to inspire Victorians wherever they are. In more than 50 performances each season, the state’s most exciting chamber musicians come together to create music with uncompromising artistic quality, impressive finesse and extraordinary passion. The orchestra’s Artistic Director is leading violinist, director and pedagogue William Hennessy AM.
A performance by MCO conjures both the intimacy and detail of chamber music and the grandeur and spectacle of orchestral music. MCO reinvents itself as an octet, a string orchestra and a mini-symphony, curating an eclectic selection of music from the last half millennium for the enjoyment of thousands of attendees each year. The orchestra commissions significant new work each year to take our art into the future.
Touring is at the heart of the orchestra’s work; each year MCO ensembles bring joy to thousands of Victorians in cities and towns across the state. The orchestra hosts A Feast of Music, a spring chamber music festival in Daylesford, and tours statewide with at least 29 touring performances in 2019. In 2018 we launched Encounter the Orchestra, offering a live orchestral experience to primary school students across Victoria.
MCO was founded in 1991 as Australia Pro Arte. In 2019 it presents its Melbourne season at Melbourne Recital Centre, Iwaki Auditorium and Hawthorn Arts Centre. Broadcasts and streaming by ABC Classic FM and the MBS Fine Music network extend access to its work nationally and internationally.
