For as long as there have been people, there has been song. Song is at the heart of rich musical traditions that bind people together, and attest to the spirit of time and place.

Eliding ideas of East and West, high and low, past and present, the music of renowned singer-songwriter Lior embodies a unique sensibility that feels urgent and relevant.

For the creation of a major new song cycle for the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Lior again pairs with regular collaborator Ade Vincent, an adventurous composer who works across classical, folk, electronic, pop, and the space between.

Embracing Lior’s vision, Sophie Rowell has chosen iconic music by Grieg, da Falla, and Rebecca Clarke, echoing musical traditions across centuries.

Why You’ll Love this Concert

The Voice of Lior

Magnetic and powerful, a performance by ARIA-award winning vocalist Lior is always a must-see. Since his seminal debut album Autumn Flow in the mid 2000s, Lior has been entrancing audiences nationally and internationally with his signature style, breaking down boundaries between styles and delivering compelling, focused vocals. Expect the unexpected from a performer who always gives it everything and goes to the heart of matters.

Hear a bold new work

Months in the making, To Be Human is a collaboration between Lior and multi-award winning composer Ade Vincent. Commissioned especially by MCO, To Be Human’s seven new songs dive deeply into the humanity of artistic creation, its struggles, inspirations and ultimate triumphs. Be among the first to hear this evocative score premiered by Lior and MCO on this tour.

An MCO string experience

Bringing together many of Melbourne’s most virtuosic string players, MCO ends its year with uplift and spectacle. The orchestra’s music has been curated by Artistic Director Sophie Rowell to evoke the connections between time, place, melody, tradition and consciousness that twine together in this concert. Highlights include passionate principal violist Merewyn Bramble performing Rebecca Clarke’s deeply moving Passacaglia; the energy of Grieg’s iconic Holberg Suite; and Spanish songs by de Falla in a new arrangement by Matt Laing.
