Our final performance for 2021!
Over 26 months, Mozart wrote the six string quartets that he dedicated to his friend, Josef Haydn. The 15th quartet is a dramatic (yet still Classical!) contribution to the set, with contrasting passages of pathos and levity. It was these quartets that inspired Haydn to tell Mozart’s father Leopold that his son was “the greatest composer known to me either in person or by name.”
To conclude our year, this program also includes the world premiere of British composer Douglas Weiland’s Eighth String Quartet. MCO’s Artistic Director William Hennessy recently recorded the composer’s earlier quartets with his Melbourne Quartet, described in Fanfare magazine as “excellent examples of a contemporary composer employing traditional architecture, but infusing his voice with modern language and emotional impact.”
