An Evening with Melbourne Chamber Orchestra
Sophie Rowell, in her new position as Artistic Director of MCO, directs this performance of two very different but equally wonderful string octets as bookends to this program. Jennifer Higdon’s Quiet Art transcends time, her enchanting soundscape evoking a moving stillness and beauty. In complete contrast, Mendelssohn’s Octet is the very definition of youthful exuberance. Written when he was just 16(!), it sparkles with every note, a joy for the players and the audience alike.
In between, MCO is delighted to collaborate with the Festival’s Artistic Directors Melissa Doecke and Ben Opie for the ebullient Concerto for Flute and Oboe by Salieri, in his day a highly celebrated composer of opera. The operatic influences sing through this work, a glorious duet between oboe and flute.
